Description
These are two Mule Deer in Estes Park Colorado on Fall River. They were watching two fisherman only a few feet away. They had a decision to make. As I watched and took photos I was a little concerned for the fisherman. They finally went on and crossed the river a few feet away. The most noticeable differences between whitetails and mule deer are the size of their ears, the color of their tails, and the configuration of their antlers. In many cases, body size is also a key difference. The mule deer's tail is black-tipped, whereas the whitetail's is not. Mule deer antlers are bifurcated; in other words, they "fork" as they grow, rather than branching from a single main beam, as is the case with whitetails. Each spring, after mating season, a buck's antlers start to regrow almost immediately after the old antlers are shed. Shedding typically takes place in mid February, with variations occurring by locale. Although capable of running, mule deer are often seen Stotting (also called "Pronking"), with all four feet coming down together. Black-tailed deer have also been introduced to Kauai (Hawaii

FYI My dad shot a mule deer in Montana. Little did I know the males have a pair of bugle teeth to help them attract females, and the interesting fact is that the two front teeth are a source of ivory. My dad had them made up as a lovely pair of ear rings for my mom. Polished ivory ear rings! Very beautiful! This piece of fine artwork has earned the honor of being chosen to show off to other artists and prospective buyers here in the Wisconsin Flowers and Scenery group. It is an honor to share this piece of well composed and beautiful art on our Featured section of our homepage. Thanks much for sharing! Liked and Faved Randy B.
